The Benefits of Unschooling: A Personal Journey and Perspective

Preschool, kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school. For many of us, these are a given. The process by which we are educated, socialized, and prepared to participate in society as productive, employable adults. We are schooled. So, what happens when children are unschooled? What happens when they are free to sleep when they are tired, direct their own learning, spend time on whatever interests them, and play as much as they choose? What happens when play, curiosity, solitude, and self-regulation are prioritized in the same way paying attention in class, test scores and completed assignments are for the schooled? Join me for a fascinating glimpse into one family’s experience with unschooling. I came away thinking... it’s not just for kids!
